Firefighters also rescued several people from the building.

The building, like many apartment structures in Oakland, has a long and recent history of code violations.

Three people who were rescued were injured.

Firefighters were quickly pulled from the structure for safety concerns, forcing them to battle the flames from the ground and via extended ladders, according to fire officials.

Three people were hospitalized and seven others rescued after crews responded to the building in the 2500 block of San Pablo Avenue, between Mead Avenue and Milton Street and adjacent to Interstate 980, Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Erik Logan said.

Logan said about 50 to 60 people lived in the building, which is in a mixed-use neighborhood of warehouses and auto shops.

Authorities in California fear at least one person is dead after an early morning four-alarm fire swept through a residential building in Oakland.

He says he opened the door to smoke in the hallway and heard children hollering from the second floor. Other residents told KTVU-TV reporters Monday that they escaped on their own.

Oakland Fire said "potentially" a body was found on the third floor of the building.
