Jeurys Familia suspended 15 games for violating Major League Baseball domestic violence policy

30 March, 2017

Familia has been suspended 15 games for violating baseball's domestic-violence policy, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports.

MLB's domestic violence policy allows Commissioner Rob Manfred to use his discretion in determining a suspension under the 2015 domestic violence policy agreed to by the league and the MLBPA.

Familia was arrested after an October 31 incident in which he allegedly bruised and scratched his wife; a court complaint said an officer found "probable cause to believe that domestic violence had occurred". Where Reyes wife dropped the charges after his wife declined to cooperate with prosecutors.

He has also agreed to speak to other players about what he has learned through this process, and to donate time and money to local organizations aimed at preventing domestic violence.

A suspension like Familia's brings back other occurrences of other Major League Baseball players such Jose Reyes past year, he received a whomping 52-game suspension to begin the 2016 season after an incident with his wife in Hawaii.

Jeurys Familia #27 of the New York Mets throws a pitch in the fifth inning of a Grapefruit League spring training game against the Miami Marlins at Tradition Field on March 22, 2017 in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Familia appeared in a anti-domestic violence public service announcement days before the complaint was filed.

"With all that has been written and discussed regarding this matter, it is important that it be known that I never physically touched, harmed or threatened my wife that evening", his statement read in part.

Familia left camp for a meeting in NY on Monday with commissioner Rob Manfred and returned to the Mets on Tuesday.

Familia lives with his wife, Bianca, and toddler son, Jeurys Jr., The New York Daily News previously reported. "Nevertheless, I have concluded that Mr. Familia's conduct that night was inappropriate, violated the policy, and warrants discipline". I did, however, act in an unacceptable manner and am terribly disappointed in myself.

"I apologize to the Mets' organization, my teammates, and all my fans".

The 27-year-old was originally charged with simple assault back in October following an arrest at his home. A key piece in the Mets bullpen, Terry Collins and crew will look forward to him closing out games.

Addison Reed is expected to take his place as the stopper until he returns.

A first-time All-Star in 2016, Familia led the majors with 51 saves last season.

And that has to go with the ability for Major League Baseball to also simply say that there is no domestic violence found here and issue a statement clearing a player with no penalty, too.
