Unemployment rates for other states were 2.7 percent in New Hampshire, 3.1 percent in Vermont, 3.2 percent in MA, 4.7 percent in Rhode Island, and 4.5 percent in CT. This year's rate of 4.6 percent was an improvement over 2016's rate of 5.0 percent.

"Our unemployment rate rose because almost 10,000 more people entered the labor force last month, and about 6,500 of them found work", Washington said.

The commissioner of the Vermont Department of Labor said she received a notice on Friday indicating 76 Merchants Bank employees will lose their jobs during a two-week period from May 12-25. There were 3,300 people receiving benefits in January 2017 and 3,400 the same month previous year.
According to the survey of households, the unemployment rate decreased one-tenth of a percentage point across the state in January to 2.9 percent. Over-the-month, both initial claims and weeks claims also grew by 10.5% and 9.9% respectively in January 2017. Still, overall employment rose by about 6,400 to 2.05 million.
Arkansas' unemployment rate is one percentage point lower than the national unemployment rate. The February report is scheduled to be released March 24.
