A year later his close friend, actress Suzanne Somers, revealed the marriage on a TV talk show, but Manilow never confirmed or commented on it. He said he kept silent on his almost four-decade relationship with a man to avoid disappointing fans.

Barry Manilow has discussed his decision to come out as gay, as well as details of his marriage to his long-term partner several years ago.

According to Barry Manilow, he was not yet struggling with his sexuality when he married his high school sweetheart, Susan Deixler.

"There's Barry Manilow the performer, and then there's the Barry 'machine, '" says Somers.

"I have not read one negative response", Manilow told Entertainment Tonight of the reaction he's received from fans ever since news broke in 2015 that he had secretly tied the knot with Kief.

Manilow conducted an exclusive interview with People and a photo shoot with his husband slash manager, Garry Kief. "I was pretty lonely before that", Manilow said.

"I thought I would be disappointing them if they knew I was gay", Manilow told People Magazine.

The couple did not sign any official paperwork out of fear the big news would be leaked, but both Manilow and Kief were reportedly wearing wedding bands. "The reaction was attractive - strangers commenting 'Great for you!' I'm just so grateful for it", Manilow said.
