Michael Flynn in talks with Congress, wary of prosecution

05 April, 2017

FBI Director James Comey has said there is no evidence of wiretapping at Trump Tower in NY but that the agency is investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

Flynn's recent financial history, made available Saturday by the White House, comes amid his effort to win immunity from congressional probers in exchange for his cooperation with official inquiries into contacts between Russian Federation and President Donald Trump's campaign in 2016.

Spicer's remark was in contrast to a tweet earlier in the day from Trump that agreed Flynn should seek immunity for testifying in what he likened to politically motivated harassment campaigns.

The ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, a Democrat, went to the White House on Friday to view documents at the invitation of the Trump administration.

Since witnesses are under no obligation to speak with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, it's fairly standard for them - through their lawyers - to demand immunity as an unwavering condition for any kind of conversation they agree to have.

In September, Flynn weighed in on the implications of immunity on NBC's "Meet the Press", criticizing Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her associates in the FBI's investigation into her use of a private email server.

"No reasonable person, who has the benefit of advice from counsel, would submit to questioning in such a highly politicized, witch hunt environment without assurances against unfair prosecution", Kelner said.

President Donald Trump tweeted his former national security adviser should ask for immunity in a probe he called a 'witch hunt, ' signed executive orders on trade and touted a new survey showing optimism among manufacturers.

Ironic, considering that during last year's presidential campaign, both Flynn and Trump made comments about how such deals indicated guilt.

During a rally on October 1 in Pennsylvania, Trump alluded to the immunity deals and said, "Did anybody else ever see so many people get immunity?"

The chief spokesman for President Vladimir Putin says relations between the United States and Russian Federation are at a very low ebb, perhaps exceeding Cold War-era hostility between Washington and Moscow. Its violations of global law are a matter of record, including its Crimea annexation and "mucking around" in other countries' elections, he said.

Flynn has offered to testify about his Russian contacts in hearings before the House and Senate intelligence committees - but only if he were granted immunity, which hasn't been granted.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Trump just wants Flynn to testify and that there are no concerns that Flynn could implicate the president in any wrongdoing.

"When you are given immunity that means you've probably committed a crime."

Flynn's new disclosure also details a $10,000 payment for a speech in NY last October paid by Ibrahim Kurtulus, a NY financial adviser who is also listed as an advisory board member for the Turkish American National Steering Committee. He has been at the top of the list for Democrats and others investigating the possible Russian Federation connections.

Since his high-profile departure from the Trump administration, Flynn and his firm, Flynn Intel Group, Inc., filed paperwork with the Justice Department formally identifying Flynn as a foreign agent and acknowledged his work for a businessman with close ties to the Turkish government.
