North Korea said Sunday that USA missile strikes against Syria last week were "absolutely unpardonable", according to a Korean Central News Agency report citing a foreign ministry spokesman.

Such closer cooperation could include tighter enforcement of global trade sanctions - nearly all of North Korea's trade passes through China - along with a crackdown on the North's ability to use the worldwide financial system and heavy punishments or exclusion from the financial world for those who deal with the North.

In a week that saw events unfolding daily, Trump's announcement Thursday about the us missile strike against Syria happened against the backdrop of the president's Florida resort where he was hosting Chinese Leader Xi Jinping and his wife.

"Then, next month when a new (South Korean) government gets under way, North Korea is expected to try to turn the situation around into a phase of appeasement and, use its moratorium of nuclear and ballistic missile tests to find middle ground with South Korea and the United States", Cheong said.

"We will bolster up in every way our capability for self-defense to cope with the USA evermore reckless moves for a war and defend ourselves with our own force", the official said, according to the report.

"If they infringe on the DPRK's sovereignty and dignity even a bit, its army will launch merciless ultra-precision strikes from ground, air, sea and underwater", North Korea said through its state-run news source. The North has long claimed that the U.S.is preparing some kind of assault against it and justifies its nuclear weapons as defensive in nature.

Washington denies it has any intention of invading the North.

The U.S. airstrikes this week were aimed at a Syrian air base, but nearly certainly got the attention of another adversary - North Korea. The exercises this year are the biggest ever and have included stealth fighter training and other maneuvers that are particularly sensitive to North Korea. -South Korean war games, which are held annually and are now underway, have raised tensions on the Korean Peninsula to the brink of war.

"This coordinated initiative could force North Korea to make real demilitarization concessions, while providing a win for both China and the United States", Markey wrote, adding that China has unsuccessfully urged the USA to engage North Korea directly for years.

"The stated goal of the last test was to validate the nuclear weapon design that would arm all of North Korea's missiles", Lewis said of North Korea's September 2016 nuclear test - its fifth and largest to date.

North Korea said on Saturday US missile strikes against a Syrian airfield on Friday were "an unforgivable act of aggression" that showed its decision to develop nuclear weapons was "the right choice a million times over".
