Boston Red Sox pitcher Matt Barnes was ejected in the eighth inning Sunday when his pitch sailed past the head of Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado.
Baltimore Orioles star third baseman Manny Machado was thrown at today by Boston in apparent retaliation for a slide of his some deemed "dirty" earlier in the series.
During Farrell's argument with Fletcher, Pedroia was standing on the top step in the dugout and caught Machado's attention.
Mychal Givens pitched two ideal innings, Donnie Hart got two outs in the ninth and Darren O'Day finished for his first save.
Red Sox: Farrell says because there's still some swelling in Pedroia's knee and ankle areas, he will "go through some imaging" Monday in Boston.
Mach ado added a home run in the fifth to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead, the score they would go on to win by.
Watching the slide, and Machado's reaction afterward, I just don't think there was anything intentional here.
Since there are no lie detectors in baseball, it's impossible to know with complete certainty whether a pitcher is lying when he says he never meant to throw at a player.
Barnes' pitch hit Machado, but only on a ricochet. Regardless-don't be surprised if Machado gets hit with a pitch tonight.More news: No active shooter at middle school in Mason County
Boston Red Sox's Mookie Betts follows through on a three-run home run against the Baltimore Orioles during the inning of a baseball game, Sunday, April 23, 2017, in Baltimore. "If I wanted to do something, I would have hit you the first time".
"No, absolutely not. I would never ever intentionally throw at somebody's head", Barnes told reporters. After Hart struck out Benintendi, Orioles manager Buck Showalter turned to righty Mychal Givens to get out of the men-on-the-corners, two-out jam.
Red Sox: Pablo Sandoval filled in at second after Pedroia left. That's baseball. I get drilled, and I go to first base. Love playing against him. Boston came in with only seven home runs, fewest in the big leagues.
MINNEAPOLIS - Justin Verlander stumbled again, Miguel Cabrera left after straining his right groin and the Detroit Tigers wasted a three-run lead against the Minnesota Twins, who burst ahead when Eddie Rosario hit a three-run homer that capped a six-run sixth inning.
Is the under a good bet in Baltimore when the Orioles host the Red Sox for the finale of a three-game set at 1:35PM ET?
"He was trying to take a four-seamer in and above his hands and the pitch got away from him, " Farrell said. If he just slid into the part of the base that I gave him, he'd have been safe.
The Red Sox also seemed to take their anger out on Manny Machado two days after his hard slide knocked Pedroia out of the series. It was one of just two opportunities Red Sox hitters had with runners in scoring position on Saturday.
Pedroia said Machado sent him a text after the game, offering an apology. The lateness of Machado's slide could be debated, unlike the fact that his spikes were higher than normal and he made contact with Pedroia.
