Iowa's state legislature recently approved a new budget that discontinues the existing Medicaid family planning program and replaces it with a state program that bans funding for abortion providers. About 30 clinic staffers are expected to be affected by the closures.

According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute - which is affiliated with the Susan B. Anthony List - 165 federally qualified community and rural health centers with more comprehensive healthcare services than Planned Parenthood exist throughout the state. Earlier this month, Branstad signed a bill not only banning abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy-without exceptions for rape, incest, or fatal fetal abnormalities-but making a 72-hour waiting period mandatory before an abortion.
"This means waiting in longer lines to get cancer screenings, driving a longer distance to receive STD testing and losing timely access to annual checkups and physicals", said Loebsack, who represents Iowa's 2nd Congressional District.
