Much before Matt Barnes threw a pitch near the head of Manny Machado, igniting any tensions between the Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles that existed after Machado's spikes-up slide injured Dustin Pedroia on Friday, Rodriguez returned to the Red Sox rotation and was nearly unhittable for six innings against his former team.
A day after all heck broke loose between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins, yet another ugly situation took hold during Sunday's game between the division rival Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox. Mancini worked a tough at-bat before lining a pitch sharply to third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who dropped the ball but was able to make the force play at second to end the inning.
"I think we've talked about it already, as a team, and we'll see how they choose to act - whether or not they choose to act professionally or unprofessionally when we get to Boston", Britton said.
Barnes was seeking retribution from Friday night's game when Machado's takeout slide on Dustin Pedroia forced the Red Sox second baseman out of the game with a calf injury and kept him out of the lineup the last two games. Pedroia still has swelling in both the knee and ankle. Pedroia clearly wasn't happy about it.
Barnes certainly sounded honest when he publicly apologized to Machado during his postgame interview in the Red Sox clubhouse.
"I look at things through Orioles glasses, orange and black", Showalter told BaltimoreBaseball.com.More news: Lawmakers settle on $1T plan to avoid US gov't shutdown
"He's not trying to hit Manny in the head", Pedroia told reporters after the game. "If you're going to protect guys, you do it the right away". "It's never me. I just go out there and play the game that I love, leave it on the field and I play with heart. Intentionally or not you don't want to get hit in the head", Machado said. "That's not how you do that, man", Pedroia said afterward.
Machado ended up making the last out, hitting a two-out popup on a pitch from Craig Kimbrel, who got his seventh save. He did hurt me. Love playing against him. That's baseball. I get drilled, and I go to first base. That's baseball, man. I'm not mad at him.
But Rodriguez has owned this park since the O's traded him to the Red Sox for Andrew Miller in 2014. Whether he threw at him or not, I'll let him and the good Lord answer. That cost Machado a four-game suspension.
Barnes denied he was trying to hit Machado, but everyone knows otherwise. "I thought I did a good slide. That's kind of a line you don't cross", Barnes said.
Mookie Betts and Hanley Ramirez homered on successive pitches in a four-run first inning, and Andrew Benintendi had a career-high five hits to help Boston avert a three-game sweep.
