Ruben Fleischer will be the director of the project. The character previously appeared in 2007's Spider-Man 3, played by a severely miscast Topher Grace. Following years of on-again, off-again, on-again reports, today the studio took a big step forward: Tom Hardy will take on the lead role of Venom.
With Hardy, it goes without saying though that our interest levels in this Venom movie have just taken a giant NY skyline swing to well and truly. intrigued!
Accordibg to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Tom Hardy has been cast as Venom for Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spinoff based on the symbiote-infected villain.
Though reportedly not a direct sequel to the upcoming franchise reboot "Spider-Man: Homecoming" with Tom Holland, Hardy's "Venom" already has a release date of October 5, 2018, locked down.More news: Timeless Uncancelled by NBC: Season 2 Ordered by Network
Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner wrote a script for 'Venom'.
It looks like a larger shared Spider-Man universe, whether it features Spidey or not, is back on at Sony Pictures. A former writer for the Daily Globe newspaper in the comics, his career was destroyed after he published a series of stories debunked by Spider-Man.
Venom is now set for an October 5, 2018, release. The studio is also developing a Silver Sable/Black Cat project within the Venom universe, along with other Spider-Man characters. Technicalities, everyone! We will see Oscar nominated Hardy's Eddie Brock have a relationship with the symbiote, which will then see him turning into Venom.
In the comics, Venom is actually a symbiotic alien lifeform that latches onto a host body, granting the wearer incredible powers but also taking them down a dark path of insanity. His involvement definitely makes Venom feel like more a proper event and not something Sony is rushing into production because everyone is ready to like Spider-Man again.
