Hamilton's best lap in a blazing, course-record one minute 11.459 seconds on Saturday earned the 65th pole position of his 11-year career, tying him with Senna for second place all-time, three behind Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher.
Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton smashed the Montreal lap record to claim pole position in qualifying for the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix. Only Michael Schumacher, with 68 poles - and himself a seven-time race victor in Montreal at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve - stands ahead on the all-time list.
"Ferrari are very, very strong in the races", Hamilton said.
"I'm not too happy with the last run we had", said the victor of the last F1 race in Monaco where Ferraris finished first and second. He was the one who inspired me to be where I am today.
"For the Senna family to send me this, I don't posses any of Ayrton's artefacts, this is the most special thing I have above and beyond all my trophies and everything". "I'm not so happy with the last run I had in qualifying".
His championship rival Vettel won in Monte Carlo to reinforce his commanding lead but faces it being cut in the race unless he can beat Hamilton into Turn One. The fact that I've now reached him in that area - I just can't believe it.
Vettel wound up third fastest behind Raikkonen and Hamilton as Ferrari and Mercedes traded fastest laps in a closely-fought day's action at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. "The team have done a fantastic job to learn from our mistakes in the last race and really build up for this one so I owe it all to them".
"Well I expect a close race".More news: ASUS debuts first Ryzen-based gaming notebook
"And being that it is the most hard season of my career racing these great guys [Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas] and Kimi [Raikkonen], and having us so close, it pushes us all to the limit, it relies on us to be ideal".
"We've known for many years that Lewis is a big fan of my uncle's - he's actually an official Ayrton Senna Institute ambassador, supporting our actions that promote a better education for Brazilian children", she said.
"I knew I had to improve, even if just by five thousandths".
It was the site of his first pole and first career win. It's really unusual to think that I'm now here and have that number of poles.
"It was a sexy lap!" I lost a bit into Turn Two, and then lost two-tenths out of the second corner and then I knew I had to catch up, which I did until the end of the lap.
Overachiever: He may have had a weekend away from his McLaren MCL32 two weeks ago, but Fernando Alonso hasn't forgotten how to get the best from it.
"It's been a pretty good first day for the team", he said. "I would have loved to repeat the second run; I probably pushed a little bit too hard. It could be a long race tomorrow, so I'm looking forward for tomorrow".
In what is fast becoming a vintage season, both men relish the prospect of a close race tomorrow. I am proud to have got the Hamilton name here.
