Egypt raises toll in Sinai attack to 23 killed

Suicide auto bomb attacks on military checkpoints in North Sinai, Egypt, have left at least 23 soldiers dead, Egyptian security sources say. The force at the compound is estimated at 60 troops.

After the attack, the militants looted the checkpoint, taking away weapons and ammunition before fleeing the scene, the officials added. The terrorists drove in two vehicles and blew themselves up as they passed through an army checkpoint.

The army is now combing the area and searching for the attackers.

The officials told The Associated Press that some senior officers have voiced opposition to the location of the checkpoint, arguing that it provided no real cover. He didn't prove a breakdown.

A number of foreign ministries have issued statements condemning a militant attack in North Sinai on Friday that killed or injured 26 Egyptian soldiers.

The military posted photos of five dead militants in blood-soaked fatigues lying in the sand.
