In total, 19 states had unemployment rates lower than the USA figure of 4.4 percent, 5 states and theDistrict of Columbia had higher rates, and 26 states had rates that were not appreciably different from that of the nation.

"We are pleased to see Indiana's unemployment rate go lower this past month and stay at its lowest levels since the mid-1990s", Indiana Department of Workforce Development Commissioner Steven J. Braun said.

Unemployment inched up 0.1 percentage point in June to settle at 4.7 percent.

But while job gains improved the first half of this year compared with last, the agency expressed concerns that the size of the labor force has declined for the fourth consecutive month. Employment estimates were revised downward in four sectors, most notably education and health services, which was revised downward by 1,400 jobs.

Nonfarm payroll jobs in California totaled 16,703,300 in June, according to a survey of businesses that is larger and less variable statistically.

Despite the uptick, Marin's jobless rate in June was the second-lowest in the state.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security reported the preliminary data Thursday from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. IL jobs growth was concentrated in professional and business services (+5,600), leisure and hospitality (+4,600), and government (+1,400). Other sectors adding jobs over the month were financial activities; leisure and hospitality; mining and logging; and educational and health services. Arts, entertainment and recreation added 800 jobs. The District of Columbia has a 6.2 percent unemployment rate.

The lowest rates were in Del Mar, 0.4 percent; Coronado, 2.5 percent; and Poway, 2.8 percent. That is down from 6.9 percent previous year.
