Putin critic says Russian lawyer's Trump Tower meeting was about sanctions

29 July, 2017

Mr. Bowder testified that they and Ms. Veselnitskaya "without a doubt" acted on behalf of the Russian government to create "chaos" in the American political system.

Charles Grassley, Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has expressed concerns regarding how and why Veselnitskaya was able to move so swiftly within certain political arenas within the United States having such freedom.

He was convicted of tax evasion in absentia by a Moscow district court in 2013, one year after spearheading Congress' passage of the Magnitsky Act - a sanctions package that infuriated Russian President Vladimir Putin, who retaliated by banning Americans from adopting Russian children.

Browder is the CEO of Hermitage Capital Management, an investment firm that was once the largest portfolio investor in Russian Federation.

"We are looking at re-writing the Magnistky Act right now to close off that opportunity", Whitehouse said, "and to make sure there is not this executive backdoor to delisting people" from the OFAC list who are already sanctioned under the Magnitsky Act.

In his testimony, Browder will accuse Fusion GPS and its founder Glenn Simpson of running a smear campaign against Magnitsky, in conjunction with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya and Russian American lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin.

The Russian corruption goes to the very top, Browder told Congress.

The Russian lawyer who met with the Donald Trump Jr.is the family lawyer for a member of the Putin regime and has worked directly for the Russian government, Browder said.

On July 11, Donald Trump Jr., the president's son, disclosed emails he exchanged arranging a meeting with a Russian lawyer named Natalya Veselnitskaya. According to the Russian lawyer, the investor had collected private information about her. Veselnitskaya said that the smear campaign was a revenge for Browder's recent defeat in a United States court in the "Prevezon" company case in which Veselnitskaya acted as a legal expert representing the Cyprus-based holding company in its defense against allegations of money laundering.

Magnitsky uncovered a $US230 million tax fraud scheme in 2008 when he was working for Hermitage that implicated high-level Kremlin officials and allies of President Vladimir Putin.

Is this another one of those coincidental Trump/ Russian things that continue to happen, or an example of collusion waiting to be collaborated or does it just look like it?

"This was a big ask", Browder said. It's been said by people who attended that meeting.

"What they were willing to offer in return, I don't know".

"Anyone who knows me understands that I am the Member of Congress least likely to take directions from government officials, especially foreign government officials".

Kushner and the White House have both said the meeting was about adoptions.

The hearing on Wednesday pertained to violations by Fusion GPS of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, otherwise known as FARA. In fact, she has denied having anything to do with the Kremlin, but the fact that she once represented interests of the F.S.B.in court may raise numerous eyebrows, especially among USA politicians. Fusion GPS is the shadowy research firm that was commissioned by interests aligned with the Democratic party to produce (possibly with the help of the FBI) the famed "dossier" containing some outlandish and disproven allegations on Trump's Russian Federation connections.

The witnesses are three officials from the Justice Department and the FBI, including one - Assistant FBI Director Bill Priestap, who has already appeared in at least one hearing in the Russian Federation imbroglio.
