Venus will now face British player Johanna Konta in her semi-final match on Thursday.
In her post match interview, Williams said she would not hesitate to reach out to her younger sister for some advice before the final. She will get another chance at the title on Saturday against either Venus Williams or Johanna Konta.
Asked what was going through her head at the finish, Konta said: "Damn, I'm done".
The Spaniard lost 6-4 6-4 to Serena in the title match two years ago before turning the tables on the 23-times major victor to land her maiden grand slam title at last year's French Open. I missed Serena terribly before the match.
"The actual first time I first saw her was when she was seventeen".
When Williams was playing her first match in the Wimbledon main draw 20 years ago, Konta had just turned six.
Her vast experience has given her plenty of weapons to unsettle her opponents and she deployed them perfectly to unsettle Konta's rhythm - particularly on her previously solid serve. I tried to do the things she would do. At 37, Williams is bidding to become the oldest Grand Slam champion in Wimbledon history. In personal meetings the American had lost 2:3, but the grass tennis players do not intersect. "I try really hard".

"But more importantly actually, I feel very, very happy and very excited for the battles that I've got to have so far in these Championships".
"You have to protect yourself and put up a barrier so that you don't let them impose themselves on what has been so good with her concentration and her game plan".
Muguruza has not won a title since claiming her only major at the French Open previous year, but is hoping the addition of 1994 Wimbledon champion Martinez to her coaching team at SW19 can help her see off Venus Williams or Johanna Konta.
Such a sum is more than seven times larger than Konta's combined Wimbledon earnings before this year's tournament. On Konta's potential, Williams added: "She played an incredible tournament".
"She's played some unbelievable matches against me, as well".
In what promises to be a clash of the power servers, Konta will seek to become the first Briton since Virginia Wade in 1977 to reach the grasscourt grand slam final.
