NFL Notes: Jaguars Open Up QB Competition After Blake Bortles' Struggles

27 August, 2017

According to the team's announcement, Bortles has only been named the starter for the Jaguars' season opener and was not declaratively named the starting quarterback for the entire season.

The good news for Bortles is that head coach Doug Marrone did announce that Bortles will get some first team reps despite not starting the game, so not all is lost for the former UCF quarterback.

The 25-year-old Bortles is 11-34 as a starter in his three seasons, throwing for 11,241 yards with 69 touchdowns and 51 interceptions and a 58.8 completion percentage. Bortles completed 12 of 16 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown with an interception.

Bortles has started 46 regular season games for Jacksonville, dating back to 2014, and threw for 3,905 yards and 23 touchdowns previous year.

The Blake Bortles era could be on the brink of collapse, as the Jacksonville Jaguars will give Chad Henne the nod for the third preseason game Thursday night. I'm sure both quarterbacks would have liked to done a better job, but offensively I think everyone needs to do a better job'.

For Henne's part, he will likely play only until the Jags can figure out what else they want to do at quarterback. "I'm going to do everything I can to help this team win and play as hard as I possibly can so I don't have to go through that again".

"I'm going to go play as hard as I can".

"[Seeing] how well I thought that he handled that whole situation, so I think being able to see that definitely helped me in handling it".

Marrone has not been pleased with what he has seen from his quarterbacks thus far in the preseason. "I think there's just one out there where maybe I just probably throw the ball away".

Instead, Bortles will make his 46th consecutive start. This was proceeded by a shaky training camp and two bad preseason performances by incumbent starter #Blake Bortles, who would now be competing with veteran backup #Chad Henne. The Carolina Panthers have shown great promise on the offensive side, combining for 54 points in two games, but they must get Newton in there at some point to be truly confident come regular season time.
