Why Christians Should Applaud the President’s Ban on Transgenders in the Military

Many were surprised with the announcement this past week that President Donald Trump was instituting a ban on transgender individuals serving in the US military.

Facing that truth, President Barack Obama ordered that service members could no longer be discharged or otherwise separated from the military exclusively for being transgender. They said their policy of allowing transgender troops to serve openly, which began a year ago, will continue until the president formally issues his directive to Mattis, who will have to draft and implement guidelines.

Under a phased roll-out of a full-inclusion policy, initiated by former US President Barack Obama, there are now more than 2,500 transgender people serving in the US military. There were also bills passed to prevent the military from shouldering the costs of hormone therapy and transition surgery of transgender individuals, Catholic Online detailed.

Trump has not yet provided any data to corroborate his claim that "tremendous medical costs" would disrupt the US's armed forces.

Catholic Online hailed the transgenderism ban as a victory for Christians, pointing to Pope Francis' reminder in Amoris Laetitia that "the young need to be helped to accept their own body as it was created".

"We will provide detailed guidance to the Department in the near future for how this policy change will be implemented".

Evangelical author and public relations consultant Johnnie Moore, who was present at the meeting, said the policy on transgender people serving in the military had not been on the agenda for the meeting, but it was one of many topics that came out throughout the day. Oh, and since a presidential tweet has no legal validity, no policy has changed. In a piece penned for Rolling Stone, the two-spirit activist expressed grave concerns for the far-reaching implications of Trump's intended ban on transgender military members. Any American who meets current medical and readiness standards should be allowed to continue serving.

Trump's tweets did not include any reference to legislation to outline or enforce the ban. This ban would affect the policy laid down by President Obama whose administration had declared that transgenders could serve openly in the military. Trump's announcement drew significant criticism from political figures, servicemen, and multiple corners of the country. The idea that a few thousand such people will disrupt a military with more than 1 million active-duty personnel is farcical - the same garbage used to fight racial and gender integration, and open service by gays and lesbians. We want people who are transgender to live happy lives, but we want unit cohesion and we want combat effectiveness.

"To choose service members on other grounds than military qualifications is social policy and has no place in our military", Carter said in a statement.

The Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll was conducted online in English across the United States.

While this is not chump change, to keep things in perspective, the USA military annually spends in excess of $84 million on drugs such as Viagra to remedy erectile dysfunction. Nationally the group has more than 3,000 members.
