With the two opposing forces fighting in close proximity to one another, fears have grown that US and Russian air power could be drawn into the fight, and even end up facing one another.

The warning was followed by an acknowledgement from the Pentagon of an unprecedented face-to-face meeting between Russian and American military leaders, which took place inside or near Syria, to address the rising tensions.

Lieutenant-General Valery Asapov, of the Russian armed forces, has been killed after coming under shelling from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants near Deir ez-Zor, the Russian Defense Ministry has announced, RT reported.

US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces have been hit by Russian bombing and mortar fire at a recently captured gas plant in eastern Syria, the mostly Kurdish militia said on Monday.

In recognition of his services, Lieutenant-General Asapov is to be presented with a state decoration posthumously.

Brig. Gen. Talal Silo, also from the SDF, stated that the firefight killed 65 ISIS militants, while 100 others surrendered.

"We strongly condemn the aggressive attacks of the Russian forces and their allies on ground, which only serve terrorism and harm the war on terror", the statement said.
