Tre Bryant carried half the Oregon Defense into the endzone from the 3 yardline two plays later for the score cutting the Ducks lead to 21-14.
After starting from its own five-yard line, Nebraska finally got its first first down of the day with seven minutes to go in the opening quarter. Junior Tony Brooks-James, who returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown against Southern Utah, rushed for 771 yards (7.1 per carry) and nine scores previous year.
OR (1-0) is playing its first season under coach Willie Taggart, who took over after the Ducks finished 4-8 last season. "I just think in the second half we were a little complacent".
"They set everything up with the run game", Leavitt said.
They were, however, far quieter at halftime as the Huskers trudged to the locker room trailing 42-14.
"You know really, really disappointing start to the game", Riley said. While the Ducks lead in this one, this touchdown pass from Tanner Lee to De'Mornay Pierson-El was pretty sweet.
Lee finished with 252 yards passing and three touchdowns for Nebraska, but also had those four picks - including the one on the first play of the last drive.
The Huskers opened 2017 with a much more competitive game than Oregon. He returned the ball 25 yards and gave OR five interceptions in two games, more than they had all of last season. Herbert threw a pass toward Jacob Breeland who missed the ball, but it was deflected to Charles Nelson to put OR inside the five yard line.More news: This striking image from space captures the monstrous scale of Hurricane Irma
Nebraska has a couple of key players injured coming into Saturday's game.
For his part, Lee had a tepid showing. Two third-quarter scoring drives pulled the deficit to 14, but that's as close as the team would get.
Senior receiver Charles Nelson has been Herbert's favorite target thus far with six catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. Nebraska offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf said the Huskers should be ready. "We have to tackle a little better".
Nebraska's maligned defense, which had trouble slowing down Arkansas State, blanked the Ducks in the second half.
The Blackshirts, meanwhile, forced two turnovers and other turnover on downs to redeem themselves from a first half in which OR (2-0) amassed 409 yards and scored 21 straight points to close the second quarter. Instead, Lee threw his fourth interception of the game to end it.
True freshmen who will make the trip include all those who have played - Lindsey, Deontre Thomas and Avery Roberts - plus Brenden Jaimes, Tristan Gebbia, Damion Daniels and Guy Thomas.
The Ducks' first-year coach described himself as a "jughead" for drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and admitted that Texas A&M's epic collapse at UCLA last Sunday was on his mind during the second half. "They made some very tough stands", said running back Royce Freeman.
When the first half finally came to an end, OR had already racked up 408 yards of offense, 313 through the air, while averaging 9.1 yards per play, covering 6-of-8 third downs, and going a ideal 5-for-5 in the red zone.
