His sessions are very structured and for some players they will appear to be boring because of the repetition of the same tactical drills again and again and again.

It took just six minutes for things to turn sour for Palace, though, with Steven Davies opening the scoring at Selhurst Park, and it did not get much better for the home side.

However, at the time Bristol were mired in financial trouble and Hodgson lasted four months in the job before being dismissed after a poor run of results.

For Hodgson it is crucial, though, because of the way his teams are set up. Dan Ashworth, who was the technical director at the time, was confident Hodgson would thrive in that situation because of his desire to be out on the training ground every day.

"The only comfort I could take is that we got better as the game went on". But a big chunk was because of the style of football played under Hodgson. "Some people are session coaches and some are team coaches", Burton says.

And the final nail in the coffin for Hodgson's time in charge of England came with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Iceland in the first knockout round, which prompted the manager to step down ahead of his contract expiring. So far this season, he's looked off-colour. "That would be special because I am a Croydon boy and didn't leave here until I was 24 years of age". "It's a question what you do going forward". By the end of the sessions his squad were mentally and physically drained. The following year they finished 10th.

Puncheon and Schlupp are holding @CPFC back. He formed a strong relationship with Ashworth, who would later follow him to the Football Association, and the two worked closely on player recruitment.

Hodgson's attitude is that individual players should sacrifice themselves for the good of the team.
