The shooting happened around midnight outside of a campus dorm.
The sheriff's also said, "Investigators are in the process of gathering evidence, interviewing persons and securing warrants".
The shooting occurred as students celebrated the university's Homecoming, the Monroe News Star reported.
The campus was not put on lockdown following the incident, but students are being advised to stay inside. Sutton says there was some sort of altercation before the shooting between an unknown suspect and the two men. "Grambling State University offices are open with normal business hours and students are expected to attend classes as scheduled", the university said in a tweet.
Grambling State University Director of University Communications Will Sutton said the casualties were Earl Andrews, a senior at GSU, and Monquiarious Caldwell, who was not an understudy. CBS notes that this isn't the only shooting to devastate Louisiana's Grambling University recently.
There's no place for viciousness on Grambling State University grounds. Last month, on September 21st, another student was shot in the arm after another altercation.
Sutton released this official statement: "Our prayers go out to the victims and their families. We will fully cooperate with the police investigation".
