Melania Trump wore the gown to three inaugural balls, dancing with her husband at each and a member of the military at the final ball, dedicated to USA troops.
The gown, designed by Herve Pierre in collaboration with Trump, featured a slit skirt, ruffled accent trim from the neckline to the hem and a claret ribbon around the waist. After giving her thanks to the Smithsonian, Trump wanted to introduce the couture designer who created her dress, Hervé Pierre.
'I was so pleased with our end result and it is now my hope that this piece is one of the many great beginnings to our family's history here in Washington, D.C.,' she said.
In an interview last month with The New York Times, Pierre said Trump first reached out to him on January 3, just 17 days before inauguration.
"Today is such an honor as I dedicate my inaugural couture piece to the First Ladies exhibit at the National Museum of American History", the first lady said in a statement provided by the White House.More news: Caitlan Coleman and Family Released by Taliban in Pakistan
"As most of you know, before being elected president my husband was never in politics", Trump said in her speech on stage.
The exhibit, The First Ladies, explores the changing role played by first ladies and American women over the past 200 years, examining how different first ladies shaped the unofficial position to make their own contributions to the presidential administrations and the nation.
The two got on the phone together and the incoming first lady explained that she needed the dress in under two weeks.
"(The first ladies) are all so gracious about the donation process", Graddy said. "For me it reflects her personality", Pierre told the magazine.
The white Wu is part of the Smithsonian collection, which, with the addition of Trump's dress this week, will bring to 27 the total number of dresses, and more than 160 other first lady clothing items and accessories. "The key for me to be elegant, it's not only to only to have a lovely dress, it's to be right for the occasion", he said.
