Previous coach Carlo Ancelotti was sacked after 14 months in charge on September 28 following Bayern's 3-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
The experienced German has been out of the game since leaving Bayern in 2013 following a hugely successful campaign which saw the club win the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB-Pokal.
Together with "Bavaria" Jupp Heynckes in the 2012/2013 season, took the Champions League and three times champion of Germany.
"It's not a comeback, it's [because of] friendships, and I've only done it because I have a lot to thank Bayern for", Heynckes told Kicker.
After Leverkusen, Heynckes returned to Bayern for his third stint in 2011, making up for second-place in the Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup in 2012 by winning them all the following season. Bayern are the only German club to ever achieve that feat.More news: 3 troops wounded in militant attack on camp in Indian-controlled Kashmir
Bayern Munich have appointed Jupp Heynckes as head coach. The talks, conducted by Uli Hoeness, Hasan Salihamidzic and myself, have shown it once again.
Heynckes first took charge of Bayern in 1987 before returning as caretaker manager in 2009. We are very grateful Jupp agreed to return as head coach. "He's the ideal man for FC Bayern at this moment in time".
"I would not have returned to any other club in the world, but Bayern Munich is an affair of the heart for me", Heynckes said. I and the staff will mobilize all the skills to get this club back to success, "said Heynckes. I'm really looking forward to this task".
That lead to Jupp Heynckes being introduced as the interim manager after reported talks with Thomas Tuchel.
