This would eventually bring Patidar support for the Congress, especially when the party was looking after the community's interest, said the leader of PAAS. "I am against any sort of horsetrading", Hardik said.
On November 20, the PAAS workers protested against Congress Party in Ahmedabad and Surat, expressing dismay over the ticket distribution for the assembly polls. Sibal thanked Hardik for declaring his support for Congress for the Gujarat polls and said their united fight would dethrone BJP. However, he did not say about PAAS alliance with the Congress. The BJP veteran leader warned Hardik that a day will come when people of the Patidar community would teach him a lesson for "playing with their sentiments".
Importantly, Congress refrained from getting into the specifics of how it plans to implement the "special category" quota, limiting itself to saying that it has the "wisdom" to find a way out. "We had not demanded any seats, but we had asked the Congress to put up candidates of our community who have a strong character", he said.
Meanwhile, soon after Hardik's press conference, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel addressed the media and accused the Congress of making a fool of the Patidar community on the issue of reservation.
He said PAAS members who had already filed nominations ceased to be members of the outfit. He said, "From the statements that I have seen and heard so far, the Congress and Hardik club is one of mutual deception".More news: Kulbhushan Jadhav's wife can meet him, Pakistan tells India
Stating that the Congress party is misleading Hardik Patel, Patel said, "Hardik is aware that over 50% reservation is not possible".
The "Vikas gando thayo chhe" campaign became a huge hit on social media and provided potent ammunition for PAAS and Congress to question the BJP's claims on development in Gujarat.
The Supreme Court ruled in a landmark case in 1992 (Indra Sawhney etc vs Union Of India And Others) that the total reservation including SC, ST and OBC quotas has to stay within the 50 percent limit to balance reservation against the principle of equality for every citizen as enshrined in Article 14 and clause 1 of Article 16.
"We are very happy that a sanjha morcha (united front) will now fight against the BJP".
