Sanders's assertion is at odds with the indictment issued by the Special Counsel investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, which states Papadopoulos was encouraged to meet with Russian officials by campaign officials.
Her comments echoed President Trump's tweet earlier in the day in which he called Mr. Papadopoulos "was already proven to be a liar".
Also announced by Mueller was a guilty plea by George Papadopolous, a former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser, to making false statements to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents.
Mr. Papadopoulos's offers were repeatedly rebuffed by the campaign, although one official told him to go to Russian Federation in order to gather dirt about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Another indicted campaign associate, George Papadopoulos, Huckabee Sanders described as an unpaid "volunteer" who was a member of a campaign group that met only once.
Both pleaded not guilty to the charges Monday afternoon. "That doesn't have anything to do with the campaign or campaign's activities", she said.
"It has to do with his failure to tell the truth. That doesn't have anything to do with the campaign or the campaign's activities".More news: Afghanistan President on one-day working visit to India
"It has nothing to do with the campaign's activities", she said of Papadopoulos' plea. "It was a volunteer position".
She said Papadopolous "reached out" to other campaign officials but no meeting ever occurred.
Sanders was then asked by a reporter: "So his activities were entirely of his invention, no one asked him to do any of these things - is that what you're telling the American public?"
All of the charges fell short of implicating Mr. Trump or campaign officials in conspiring with Russian Federation to affect the outcome of the election.
"We believe that it will be concluded soon", she said.
On Monday, Sanders tried to steer the news conference toward Republican plans to reform the nation's tax code. "I'm just saying these are the principles that we've laid out, and we haven't adjusted or changed our principles since this process started". "And he was dismissed not long after that", Sanders said.
