In the meantime, the 25 million inhabitants of the South Korean capital, Seoul would be in grave danger from the enemy to the north and that United States and allied forces would be "subject to attack by conventional or chemical weapons" which would further delay their entry into the war.

Asked at a news conference in Vietnam if he could see himself being friends with Mr Kim, the president said: "That might be a unusual thing to happen but it's a possibility".

He called on nations to stop financing and trading with North Korea.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One while making his way to Hanoi on Saturday, Mr Trump said he believed the Russian leader was being honest when he denied meddling.

Trump, who is 71 years old, made the comment after attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Vietnam.

The Korean Central News Agency referred to Trump on Saturday as a "destroyer" and a "dotard" who "begged for nuclear war".

After more than a week of carefully crafted messages about his trip to Asia, U.S. President Donald Trump has again launched a tweet storm aimed at his critics at home and overseas.

Asked if he could see himself being friends with Kim, Trump said: "That might be a odd thing to happen but it's a possibility". Trump said he also spoke while in Vietnam earlier this weekend with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the North Korea issue.

This isn't the first time Trump and Kim have traded barbs.

The US think-tank said: "Although Pyongyang is outspent by its neighbours in dollar-to-dollar comparisons and defence experts say it operates with raging equipment and technology, the regime's forward-deployed military position and missiles aimed at Seoul ensure that Pyongyang's conventional capabilities remain a constant threat to its southern neighbour".

In the White House briefing room last week, Trump's national security adviser H.R. McMaster told reporters the administration would wait "a few months" before reassessing their strategy.

Three days after Tillerson said he was "pleased to see that the regime in Pyongyang has certainly demonstrated some level of restraint that we've not seen in the past", North Korea fired three short-range ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan.
