Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appeared briefly for photos outside Kensington Palace, London, and showed off the diamond engagement ring. "This ring is truly priceless with unmatched cultural significance", she said in an email.
The stunning, yellow gold ring was designed by Prince Harry himself and includes a central stone from Botswana, where the pair recently went on holiday, and two diamonds from Diana's collection.
The two met in July 2016 through mutual friends in London. Prince Harry popped the question in London earlier this month, but the engagement was not announced until just now.
As she got to know Harry, Markle learnt about the huge amount of public scrutiny that the royals face, and she said she was not prepared for the level of attention their relationship would have.
"I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her", he said.
"It's days like this I really miss having her around", he added.
"I did not have any understanding of just what it would be like", she said, saying there was a misconception that because she was an actress she would be used to being in the media spotlight.More news: Fallen Kingdom' teaser: Chris Pratt befriends a baby dinosaur
Ms Markle's parents, Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland, said their daughter was a "kind and loving person" and they were "incredibly happy".
"She barley let me finish", Prince Harry said.
Monday's announcement sets the stage for the most anticipated royal wedding since William married Catherine Middleton in 2011 in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The pair dated for almost a year and their wedding will occur sometime in the spring of 2018, royal officials announced.
In his office's warning to the media, Prince Harry referred to the sexism and racism directed at ms Markle, whose father is white and her mother African-American.
Markle showed off her three-stone engagement ring set in yellow gold, which features a diamond from Botswana and two other gems from the collection of his mother, Diana, who died in a auto crash in 1997.
The prince said Ms Markle would easily take to the role of being a member of the Royal Family and said they were a "fantastic team".
"Very first time we met", the prince said.
However, they all agreed that in this case, the ring is "priceless" due to its ties to Princess Diana.
