The Waller County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook that deputies were attempting to take Black into custody when shots were fired.
Black, 45, was apprehended in Hempstead, more than 100 miles from the scene of the shooting, by the Waller County Sheriff's Department.
On Interstate 45, DPS Trooper Damon Allen was shot and killed while making a traffic stop in Freestone County, just south of Fairfield, at approximately 4 pm on Thanksgiving Day.
Authorities are searching for Darbrett Black.
DPS said Black, of Lindale, Texas, fled the scene in a auto and was spotted about three hours later more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Fairfield, in Waller County.More news: Dream Chaser completes successful glide test
"Officials in Limestone and Freestone counties came together to conduct a massive search for Black and described him as a black male, 5' 11" weighing 175 pounds.
According to authorities, Black left the shooting scene driving a Gray Chevy Malibu LP# JDN4273. Officials urge anyone who sees this man to contact law enforcement and do not approach him. Lindale News and Times stated that Black allegedly crashed into a deputy's vehicle when he was being chased by Smith County deputies. The agency said the suspect shot and killed the trooper with a rifle during a traffic stop.
Overnight, a Hays County deputy was injured and a suspect found dead after a shooting that occurred while deputies responded to a burglary report in Wimberley, officials said. Dabrett Black is being held in the Brazos County jail on a $500,000 bond. He is accused of fatally shooting Trooper Damon Allen on Thursday. "The killer will face justice, and the State of Texas will continue to offer our unwavering support for the men and women in law enforcement who keep our communities safe". Abbott also expressed his "most honest condolences" to the trooper's family.
