Israel Destroys Hamas Cross-border Attack Tunnel Leading Into Israel

The IDF warning came just one day after rocket fire from Gaza struck southern Israel amid ongoing regional tensions stemming from the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

Hours after the destruction of the terror tunnel that infiltrated into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, the IDF is calling the operation method that it utilized "ground breaking".

"The continuation of the instances of [rocket] fire will lead to a severe and painful response by the Israel Defense Forces".

He added intelligence indicated the tunnel belonged to Hamas, the militant organization that controls Gaza, but no Israeli military personnel or civilians were considered at risk and there was no exit point at the time it was destroyed.

Such tunnels have been used in the past to carry out attacks.

This was the second tunnel destroyed using a new system to detect, expose and destroy tunnels in the past six weeks.

Besides the steps taken by the IDF against the terror tunnels, Hamas has restraint forces in order to prevent terrorists from closing in on areas near the Israeli border.

The tunnel, which had been monitored for several weeks, was demolished on Saturday, the IDF announced Sunday.

In October, the army destroyed a cross-border terror tunnel built by the Islamic Jihad, killing 14 terrorists, including two senior Islamic Jihad commanders and two Hamas members. Dozens of protestors in Gaza set fire to US flags and pictures of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
