Brendan announced he had been dropped from the BBC ballroom show after 14 years, claiming producers had decided not to renew his contract for "editorial reasons".

There had been speculation that Brendan would not return to the series following backstage clashes with the judges.

Earlier, Brendan had revealed that he was in "shock" after hearing that he'd been booted off the BBC dancing programme. I love that side of the show.

The 41-year-old joked to ITV show Lorraine: "Nobody will argue with the judges - I don't know who I'm going to hand the baton to".

"Shame on @bbcstrictly for not renewing @BrendanCole contract. he is by far and away my favourite dancer, a truly incredible credit to his profession".

Brendan told Lorraine he would like to continue on Strictly if he had the choice.

Two Strictly Come Dancing super fans share their conflicting views on the dancer's departure.

Fans of the show expressed their disappointment on social media, and Hawkins paid tribute to Cole's time on the series.

Brendan said: "I've always known this day would come".

"It's an editorial decision. I still can't believe it - I've watched the show for years, but there'll be a sparkle less for me from now on".

The dancer's most recent partner on the show, Charlotte Hawkins, has tweeted how sad she is about the decision. "I would have preferred to have made the decision myself, but maybe I would never have made it".

"The last five years I haven't really made much of a noise on the show with my partners, they haven't been able to do what I've wanted to do. I love them to bits". Poor man was in bits, give him a big hug from us all when you next see him. No disrespect to them.

The star has taken part in every series since it began in 2004, partnering everyone from Kelly Brook to Lisa Snowdon, Lulu to Kirsty Gallacher, and was crowned champion once (with Natasha Kaplinsky in 2004).

He would go on to make the final again with Lisa Snowdon and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
