Just like their teaser indicated, one of the major features of this new Vive hardware is an increased display resolution.
The highlight of the new system is the improved combined 2880 by 1600 resolution from its dual-OLED displays, which the company boasts is a 78 percent increase over the original Vive.
"Viveport is moving to a VR first experience model, and with the all-new Viveport VR, we are changing the way consumers discover, experience and acquire VR content", said Rikard Steiber, president, Viveport, in the announcement's press release.
"Vive Pro offers an immediate upgrade for both VR enthusiasts and enterprises that want to utilise the best VR experience". There will also be a dial that will adjust the headset to your head for better comfort. Obviously, the main advantage of this is a larger room-scale environment to explore, but you can also use it to host more Vive headsets (or Steam VR-enabled headsets) in the same space. This device takes what the HTC Vive is and ramps every aspect up another notch. Having stereo cameras on the device have the potential to provide a lot of utility ranging from a stereo view of your surroundings when you are nearing the chaperone boundaries to potential AR applications.
HTC did not mention if or whether the company would begin manufacturing improved HTC Vive controllers, nor whether they would work off of Valve's "Knuckles" spec for a new SteamVR controller.More news: Amazon Reports Biggest Holiday Season Ever
The new headset will also come with integrated headphones, and is created to be lighter and more comfortable than the existing Vive headset.
HTC's upgraded Vive headset is a much-needed update for the line. Pricing for both configurations is yet to be announced.
For instance, if they have the HTC Vive that's been out for a good year or so now, the Vive Wireless Adaptor will bring Intel's WiGig technology to the same headset that has been in the market, coming later in the year to cut that big cord.
The Vive Wireless Adaptor will ship in quarter three of 2018 to customers worldwide. What do we know about that until now? We know that it will default as a wired VR system, however, and we can nearly certainly confirm that it will not offer an improved field-of-view (FOV), thanks to the new resolution conforming to the original Vive's resolution ratio.
