Police in Pakistan said on Tuesday they had arrested a man suspected to be a serial killer responsible for the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl, a case that ignited nationwide protests over allegations of government inaction. "I will request the political parties to support my wish", Sharif said.
A representative of the Punjab Forensic Science Agency shared the results of the DNA test with the media, explaining how it had definitively established that Imran Ali was the killer. Shehbaz added, "He [Imran] admitted to all his crimes in a polygraph test that was conducted after his DNA matched the sample".
According to the details provided, the suspect has been identified as 24-year-old man named Imran Ali. "He kept her at his residence, that means his family and friends are also involved in the murder", the grieving father said. He did not specify how many of them died but CNN understands from family members that that at least four were killed. The sketch of the man authorities believe picked up Zainab.Zainab disappeared earlier this month in the northeastern Paksitani district of Kansur after being taken near her home.
The suspect, who lived in the same area as Zainab, confessed to the crime, a police official told Al Jazeera. Reports also say Khan's appearance matches with the images of the suspect caught on CCTV footage recovered by the police.More news: Rainbow-feathered bird-like dinosaur discovered in China
The minor, who was a resident of the Kasur district of Pakistan's Punjab province, was kidnapped on her way to a tuition centre on January 4. Her parents had been in Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah and she had been living with her maternal aunt.
An autopsy confirmed that Zainab was strangled and sodomized.
During the proceedings, police pleaded for a 15-day physical remand for interrogation. The Supreme Court on last Sunday gave a 72-hour deadline to Inspector General of Police to arrest the culprit. The incident also stirred a national outcry demanding justice for her.
Earlier, a 23-year-old suspect was taken into custody but was later released since the DNA findings did not incriminate him in the murder.
