Almost 5,000 USA flights were canceled Thursday because of the heavy snow storm along the East Coast, and travelers at BWI Airport are scrambling to find alternate ways to reach their final destinations.

At Denver International Airport, some flights arriving from New Jersey and NY have been canceled.

Airport officials urged travelers to check with their airline before heading to the airport.

Airport spokesperson Nancy Volmer said with the exception of 17 canceled and 39 delayed flights Thursday afternoon, flights were "on schedule and running smoothly".

"The snow here locally was not bad significant, but obviously further to the Northeast in large markets like NY and Boston, the storm is much more intense", said BWI spokesman Jonathan Dean.

More than 2,300 flights to or from LaGuardia, JFK and Newark were canceled, according to FlightAware.

Storm causing airline cancellations, flight suspensions

- The massive winter storm caused a huge travel mess for airline passengers on the East Coast.

Several airlines began cancelling flights Wednesday in preparation for the storm.

New York's La Guardia Airport said on Twitter that "almost all" flights there were canceled because of the weather. All told, the airline said it and its regional partners have canceled more than 1,2000 flights because of the storm.

Amtrak is advising travelers to allow for extra time to get to the train station, and be extremely careful inside stations and on platforms. Three people were killed in North Carolina after their vehicles ran off snow-covered roads, authorities said.

The airport, which suspended operations shortly before 11am local time (1600 GMT), was expected to reopen later in the eening, FAA officials said. "He was like, 'Are you sure you're flying out today?'" she said. Despite their high rates of cancellations, major airports in the Northeast remained open Thursday.
