But Mattis has consistently stressed non-military actions, including global sanctions.

But North Korea, which agreed to participate in the Winter Games as part of rare talks with the South, demanded a complete suspension.

South Korean and USA defense chiefs met Friday to discuss North Korea, issuing a statement that continued diplomacy-backed sanctions can drive the rogue state to the negotiating table and tamp down the escalating threats between Pyongyang and Washington.

The regime of North Korea's Kim Jong-un remains a danger to the world, Defense Secretary James N. Mattis said yesterday in Honolulu, while emphasizing diplomatic efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue.

26 cited three anonymous Western European intelligence sources as confirming that North Korea had loaded coal previous year onto boats to Russian Federation, from which it was transported to South Korea and Japan in a "likely violation of United Nations sanctions".

With the Winter Olympics in South Korea approaching, Washington and Pyongyang have tamped down harsh rhetoric toward each other, although US experts said the calm may be temporary.

The team, which consists of 35 players in total - 12 North Koreans and 23 South Koreans - is getting ready to compete at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, which begin on 9 February.

The talks for the Olympics, Mattis explained, do not address the overarching problems with North Korea.

The Defense Secretary reportedly said diplomacy would impose reason on the reckless rhetoric and unsafe provocations of North Korean Dictator Kim Jong Un.

"We will carry out only sanctions which are adopted by the UN Security Council".

Reuters writes that it could not independently verify that North Korean coal has been shipped through Russian Federation as described by its sources, or if so, whether the owners of the ships involved knew they were transporting banned goods.

South Korea had asked the North to provide the power to hold the concert, according to the government official.

Recent weeks have seen Trump express openness toward direct talks with the DPRK and optimism about the warming relations between the two Koreas, as the two Koreas have been engaged in an abundance of projects to promote the Winter Olympics in recent weeks.

"When it comes to joint events, the South is in consultation with the US and the worldwide community in a bid not to spark a row over a possible violation of sanctions", Baik said.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has said all options are on the table when it comes to North Korea's pursuit of a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the United States.
