The statue was site closed by the federal government shutdown.

The federal government shut down early Saturday morning as Democrats and Republicans continued to remain deadlocked over Trump's proposed all along the Mexican border and the fate of thousands of undocumented immigrants who came to the USA illegally as children. Andrew Cuomo announced that Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty would stay open on the state's dime under an agreement struck with the Interior Department.

O'Meara was in NY working as part of a team helping to train fellow NY firefighters in hazardous materials. "And symbolically, you can shut down the government, but you can't shut down the Statue of Liberty". But in Philadelphia, visitors were turned away at the Liberty Bell.

While active-duty troops will stay at their posts during a shutdown, people stationed overseas were touched by the political fallout nearly immediately.

The Statue of Liberty, temporarily closed by a U.S. government budget shutdown, will reopen on Monday to once again beckon other countries' "huddled masses" - as well as not-so-poor tourists with dollars to spend.

Senate moderates in both major political parties expressed hopes of finding a way out of the government shutdown mess on Sunday while their leaders played the blame game.

He says the closure of the statue is a metaphor for what he says President Trump and Congress are doing through their policies on immigration. During the shutdown, at least half of the daily $55,000 or so in revenue would be lost.

NY had the same arrangement in 2013, during the last government shutdown.

Indeed, the Trump administration encouraged national parks officials to keep sites open without full staffing during the shutdown in an effort to minimize public outcry, according to the Washington Post.

The park service said the closure of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island was effective immediately and until further notice. "But now, we're not allowed to go out there and see it".

But there will be a lot of federal workers, thousands, who will see a change.

"I just don't understand it really", she said of the shutdown.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s childhood home, historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and the visitor center at MLK National Historic Site in Atlanta were closed.

But the shutdown wasn't knocking Old Ironsides out of commission.

Xanterra Parks & Resorts, a private company that manages lodges, concessions and restaurants in numerous national parks including Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Rocky Mountain and Zion, said they will remain open during the shutdown.
