With funds already tight in a local economy hampered by $13 billion in federal cuts since 2013, many local and state officials expressed anger at the current budget impasse in Congress that, for their governments, either means shutting down programs that rely on federal dollars or footing the bill to keep them open. President Trump said in a tweet on Tuesday that the "biggest loser" in a government shutdown would be the military. Whoever works for agencies and departments that are considered nonessential, including agencies that pay out small business loans and process passport requests, will cease to work until Congress is able to agree on a bill for the federal budget.
The official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity, said employees who are considered essential and have to work will do so with no expectation of a regular paycheck. He did host Schumer for talks on Friday afternoon when the Democratic minority leader claimed to have pushed hard for a deal - even putting the issue of funding for Trump's promised border wall on the table. "I really think the pressure is on the president", he said.
"We will be prepared for all contingencies, including of a lapse" in funding, Nauert said.
One local political scientist said unlike past shutdowns, this one may not get politicians voted out of office.
Without an agreement, the government would partially shut down - and the key word here is "partial". We need a merit based system of immigration, and we need it now!
