Shiffrin, the 2014 Olympic champion in the slalom, isn't quite as strong in the giant slalom, but she posted a blazing run in her first attempt that left her in second place. She became the first American to win the woman's giant slalom at an Olympics since Julia Mancuso in 2006.

"I don't know when it was, at some point today after the first run I thought, like, 'I can really win this.' I just tried to hang on to that feeling and then focus on my skiing a bit", Shiffrin told reporters after her win.

"It's been a mental strain the last couple days, thinking we're going to race and then not racing".

- Norway's Ragnhild Haga won her first gold medal in the women's 10-kilometer freestyle, topping the field by more than 20 seconds.

Both skiers won medals Thursday, Shiffrin in the giant slalom and Svindal in the men's downhill.

Mazdzer won the silver medal in men's singles luge on February 11, becoming the first American in history to win a medal in the event.

"I still think everyone has some first-run jitters so what you saw there wasn't a good depiction of what we can all do", she added. Shiffrin could race four more times in Pyeongchang and has a shot to join elite company here. "She has to have a day off", said Eileen Shiffrin, who's not only Mom, but a trusted coach on Team Mikaela. The 22-year-old trailed by two-tenths of a second following her first run but rallied on the bumpy course to win.

One Olympic gold medal down. "We will show you the best of us at Beijing Games". Literally. Shiffrin started practicing in her parents' driveway at the tender age of two.

Rather than stare into all those nervously expectant eyes back home in Colorado, she reduced her pursuit of big Olympic glory to something as simple as one pony-tailed girl on a hill shrouded in trees, where the only sound is made by skis slicing flawless arcs in the snow.

Her go-to workout song is Daft Punk's "Get Lucky".

In her six World Cup giant slalom wins, Shiffrin never had to come from behind to overtake the leader.

It had been postponed due to high winds, but when she finally got to race, Shiffrin was golden. That experience really helped me this year, knowing ahead of time what it was going to be like, what the pressure was going to be like. A slight bobble near the end, and Shiffrin crossed in 2:20.02 - the big scoreboard reading "1", Mowinckel now on the next line down in 2:20.41, Brignone third in 2:20.48. "So to finally have the race actually happen today, I was like, 'Well, I really hope that I actually can do it when the time comes that we finally race.' And, yeah, I did". Oeberg entered the race ranked 42nd in the World Cup standings in the individual event. I am capable of so much more.

"It doesn't bother me, people can speculate as much as they like", he told Reuters.

In 2011, just a few weeks after her 16th birthday, she won the slalom title at the U.S. National Championships, making her the youngest competitor to claim a national title. "It's just an wonderful story, and I'm unbelievably happy".
