The Chiefs offseason retooling found another gear with the club agreeing to send cornerback Marcus Peters to the Los Angeles Rams.

The report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network says that Kansas City got multiple picks back from the Rams, although it's uncertain what he got back. In fact, he was selected by the Chiefs one pick after the 49ers drafted defensive lineman Arik Armstead with the 17th-overall pick. Kansas City last month traded quarterback Alex Smith to the Redskins for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third-round draft pick.

Schefter later confirmed the news of the trade, which can not be finalized until March 14, the start of the new league year. His 19 regular-season interceptions rank tied for the sixth-most during a player's first three seasons in the league during the Super Bowl era.

By Peters shipping to the Rams, that further signals Trumaine Johnson's expected departure from the Rams in free agency. Instead, the Chiefs chose to go with Peters, Steven Nelson and Terrance Mitchell as the top three corners. Why would the Chiefs trade one of the most talented and productive young cornerbacks in football when they seem primed for years of deep playoff runs? Johnson played the past two seasons on the Rams' franchise tag, and he could command a record-setting deal. If he does indeed hit the open market, he may be a target for the 49ers.

Paylor adds that the Browns were not interested in talking about a Peters deal.
