Williams, playing her first official match since having a baby, and older sister Venus were beaten in a dead doubles rubber by the Netherlands in the Fed Cup in Asheville, North Carolina, but walked away feeling upbeat.
Serena Williams may make jaws drop when she plays tennis, but her adorable baby daughter Alexis Olympia is making hearts melt on the court. All of this is fine, but more important than the details of the match is the fact that Serena's husband Alexis Ohanian and her baby daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. were spotted in the stands cheering her on - marking baby Alexis' first public appearance!
The former World No. 1 played in an exhibition match in December against the French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, which she lost and subsequently avoided the current year's Australian Open. "So I feel like that I'm on the right track".
Early in the match Serena showed the effects of her lengthy layoff, perhaps most noticeably when she shanked a routine volley that left her bent over in embarrassment. The Czechs, who have won the Fed Cup 10 times, will travel to Germany for the semi-finals in April.More news: NASA captured the most distant photograph from the Earth
The 23-time Grand Slam champion played in her first competitive match since winning last year's Australian Open final. Both were in attendance over the weekend, seated just behind the players' box. "I didn't expect to.have that much power on my serves, even though they didn't go in", said Williams.
"I didn't manage my time well", she said.
"Serena's gonna be joining her sister Venus!" she announced, to roars of approval before the superstar appeared dressed in a white top, dark blue shorts topped off with a red headband. The sisters have won 22 doubles titles together, the last of which was Wimbledon in 2016. Maybe that's why I felt like I did better. "So many Americans are doing great, hopefully I'll be able to be an option, I'll be doing better by then", she said.
