Alabama also lost two commits to flips, as Quay Walker ended up choosing Georgia and Bobby Brown chose Texas A&M.

Both prospects are also ranked within the top-five of the class rankings and could help boost Alabama's class into the top three of the class rankings.

Cornerback Eddie Smith commited to Alabama on Wednesday in front of Salmen High School in Louisiana. That's recruiting. We are happy with the guys that we got. "But overall, I think we solved a lot of needs in this class".

While securing two much-needed defensive backs, including Surtain Jr. and promising three-star Louisiana product Eddie Smith, and three-star SC linebacker Jaylen Moody were important, it didn't do much to appease fans disappointed in losing its team recruiting title for the first time this decade. Since then, Alabama has had the No. 1 recruiting class in eight of the past 11 years. We were pleased with the guys we were able to attract. In 2012, No. 2 safety Landon Collins, who was the No. 1 prospect in Louisiana out of Dutchtown High just outside of Baton Rouge and the No. 17 national prospect, signed with Alabama.

That could change, though, Nick Saban said in cryptic answer about the position Wednesday.

"You know, nothing comes out ideal because we don't control these things, but we'd have liked to get two inside linebackers, we got one. We redshirted a kicker from last year's class - who really counts in this year's class - so we couldn't really take a full class this year from a numbers standpoint".

The Fort Lauderdale native had been linked to LSU for some time, and also had his pick of the litter with a grand total of 32 offers heading into Signing Day.

Saban and the Crimson Tide were almost kept out of the College Football Playoff this season as a result of a late-season loss to Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Alabama missed on several targets on Wednesday such as 4-star defensive end Malik Langham and 4-star wide receiver Jacob Copeland, who signed with Florida, 4-star wide receiver Justyn Ross, who signed with Clemson and 3-star tight end Glenn Beal, who signed with Texas A&M.
