Slovenia came from two goals down in the third period to beat the United States 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday in the opening round of the men's Olympic hockey tournament.

Canada tacked on another, catching the U.S.in a line change and starting a three-on-two rush.

In the game because of goalie Gasper Kroselj, who stopped 34 of 36 shots, Slovenia came to life when Jan Urbas scored 5:37 into the third period. OAR might be one of the more talented teams in this years Olympics, but they now sit in last place with zero points after their disappointing loss. Omark, who parlayed his YouTube fame as a shootout specialist into a 79-game career with the Edmonton Oilers and Buffalo Sabres, had three assists in Sweden's convincing 4-0 win over Norway. "It's an incredible ...when the two teams play well you can't not help but love watching it". Team USA and Canada both received those honors this year. Although the United States made the first offensive thrust, a quick reversal of the puck by Slovenia allowed Mursak to fly down the left wing, and his goal only 38 seconds into the extra period sent the Americans to bed grumpy.

The women's quarterfinals are now set.

Canada will play the victor of a quarter-final between the Russian team and Switzerland in the semis, while the Americans play either Sweden or Finland.

What's up with the USA men's team?

Feeling good about how they tilted the ice for two periods, the Americans need to avoid a repeat of how they went into a shell in the third period and abandoned the aggressive approach that had been working so well. "It was a pretty special moment that they can be here and support me like that", said the 37-year-old Lee, who has played in five different pro leagues in four different countries.

Wojtek Wolski tallied a highlight-reel goal and an empty-netter in Canada's first of three games in the preliminary round. "Could have been a little tired mentally. But no excuses. They were the better team in the third".

The Slovenians next face the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation, who lost to Slovakia 3-2 on Wednesday.

"If you drag this one out then. you're not going to be ready to play in a couple of days". "I'm proud of the team and hopefully we can start looking to the next game and surprise somebody else".

In the four games leading up to the Olympics, the US lost all of them and only scored three times.

The Americans can't be happy with the result against Canada, but can be somewhat pleased with the effort - and the room for improvement. "Obviously not the outcome we wanted certainly, but we've just got to put a few more in the back of the net".

"It was exciting to get my first, but it would have been much better to get a win tonight", said Greenway, one of four American college players in the USA team. "There was a little bit of nerves at the beginning, but once we scored that goal, everybody eased back and played the game".

The U.S.at least picked up a point by getting to overtime, while the Russians lost 3-2 in regulation to Slovakia across town at Gangneung Hockey Centre.

The Swedes have done this before with young defensemen - please recall the freaky decision to dress Oliver Ekman-Larsson for their semifinal game in Sochi and then not actually give the then-22-year-old Arizona Coyotes defenseman a shift in the game.
