A man accused of stealing Frances McDormand's best actress Oscar from an official after-party has been arrested, Los Angeles police said on Monday.

Receiving award from Jennifer Lawrence and Jodie Foster, Frances said in her acceptance speech, "I'm hyperventilating a little bit".

The photographer, not recognizing the suspect as an award recipient, followed closely then took the Oscar from him.

A video, which has since been deleted, appeared on Bryant's Facebook page which showed him holding the award while wearing a tuxedo. But last night, she used her big Oscar win for a call to arms. "They celebrated their reunion with a double cheeseburger from In-N-Out".

Before McDormand retook possession of her Oscar, Reuters photographer Mario Anzuoni saw an Academy official at the Governor's Ball hand the recovered statuette to best actor victor Gary Oldman to return to McDormand. He said Bryant has had no contact with law enforcement for six years and represented no threat to the community.

"I'm committed to the Inclusion Rider", Brie Larson, victor of the Best Actress Oscar for the 2015 film "Room", wrote on Twitter after the Academy Awards ceremony. "This is mine. We got it tonight, baby". "This is mine. We got it tonight, baby", reports NDTV. Police said Bryant had a ticket to the Governors Ball at the Hollywood & Highland complex.

Once the women who had been nominated for awards at the event were on their feet, McDormand addressed the rest of the room.

The hapless thief remains in police custody on $20,000 bail. His social media accounts also include photos of him at shows including the Emmys, Screen Actors Guild Awards and MTV Video Music Awards.

Prosecutor Rena Durant told Los Angeles' Foltz Criminal Justice Centre he has 13 primarily theft-related convictions from between 1994 and 2012.

"The fact that I just learned that after 35 years of being in the film business, we're not going back", she said.

"You know what, I can't believe I got this".
