The Chicago Bears have placed the transition tag on veteran defensive back Kyle Fuller, giving them a chance to match any offer he might receive in free agency.

Given Fuller's performance this year, the Bears chose to apply the transition tag, a designation that gives the Bears the opportunity to match any contract offer that Fuller agrees to.

It saved his tenure with the Bears, and they want to see who the real Fuller is.

.

In four National Football League seasons, Fuller has registered eight interceptions and 188 tackles in 48 appearances.

The 26-year-old cornerback is essentially like a restricted free agent now. The tagging club is awarded no compensation if it chooses not to match.

The transition tag is the lowest tier of the three and is set to pay Fuller just under $13 million, as opposed to the roughly $15 million the franchise tag would have payed him.

Fuller, who was drafted by the Bears in the first round in 2014 (14th overall), is coming off by far the best year of his career.

He is the third of four brothers to play in the NFL. "This allows us to continue to work together on a long-term deal".

"Kyle is a player we value", said Bears GM Ryan Pace.

However the Bears do it, they know they need to keep Fuller or risk adding cornerback to the list of positions already in need of upgrade in the offseason.

The only other corners on the current roster are Marcus Cooper and Cre'Von LeBlanc.

Fuller missed the entire 2016 season after a preseason arthroscopic procedure on his knee, which prompted the Bears to decline the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.
