The third-seeded Wolverines held the ninth-seeded Seminoles scoreless for the final 4 1/2 minutes of the half. Florida State couldn't do anything in the second half except take mostly out-of-control drives to the basket. Loyola-Chicago is holding teams to 41% shooting on the season, and MI has really only had one big game offensively in this tournament.
After taking a 10-point lead on Duncan Robinson's 3-pointer with 2:26 to play, Michigan's lead dwindled to three before P.J. Savoy missed a potential tying 3-pointer for Florida State with 58 seconds left. The Wolverines weren't at their best offensively, shooting a weak 38.8%, however they were able to silence the Seminoles by holding them to 32% shooting. The Wolverines stayed in front of the Seminoles in the second half, despite the Seminoles cutting the lead to three points with about a minute remaining.
Michigan's Charles Matthews has either been living under a rock for the past week, or has been intently locked in on the Wolverines' NCAA Tournament run.
Florida State managed only two points in a 10 ½-minute stretch spanning halftime, and MI took a 10-point lead before Cofer led the Seminoles back into it.
The question from Jacobson was fair, and Hamilton was probably just frustrated about having his strategy called into question following such a big game. He says that what happened to the Florida State Coach happens all the time in sports.
He received a $200,000 bonus when the Seminoles made the 68-team field and an additional $50,000 for consecutive appearances.
Hamilton would get a $275,000 bonus if Florida State defeats MI. It was the first time both teams had majority black starters in the NCAA title game. The Wolverines will now move on to face the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers, who have been the Cinderella of the 2018 NCAA Tournament.More news: Warriors star to have MRI exam on MCL 'strain'
Robinson grabbed the rebound and the Seminoles opted not to foul the strong MI shooter. Ben Richardson came through with his best game of the season, sinking 23 points on a sparkling 6 for 7 performance from beyond the arc. Kansas State was denied its attempt to return to the Final Four for the first time since 1964.
"We take pride in our defense, so we believe in ourselves", said MI guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rakhman, who scored nine points on 3-of-9 shooting.
But this isn't any ordinary 11 seed. Loyola-Chicago is an elite defensive team, limiting the opposition to 62.4 points, placing them fifth in the nation. Michigan's winning streak is now up to 13 straight, and their dazzling defense has been a key in each win. This marks the Ramblers' first trip to the Final Four since 1963, while the Wolverines last reached the Final Four in 2013.
And with MI up by four, Florida State allowed the Wolverines to dribble out the clock without fouling again.
Listen: Is trailing by four and without the ball with 11 seconds left a steep mountain to climb?
For Saturday night's South Regional final, the Ramblers' elder statesmen are sitting immediately behind the Loyola bench. None of those squads advanced to the National Championship. The Ramblers haven't made it back to another Final Four. So we're ... basically going up against Loyola of Chicago and Sister Jean.
