Minnesota has a sparkling stadium, the site of Super Bowl 52, and the organization just moved into new state-of-the-art suburban headquarters with top-of-the-line practice fields and training facilities just last week.
Many contracts are bonus and incentive-laden, deals often restructured for cap space, but Cousins will get every penny of the contract he signs and with names such as Matt Ryan and Aaron Rodgers closing in on the end of their contracts, the market is likely to explode.
Six years ago, GM John Elway landed Peyton Manning, the biggest free-agent prize in National Football League history, following his release by the Colts and a series of neck fusion surgeries. The former Washington Redskins quarterback is set to meet with Vikings officials in Minnesota on Wednesday and Thursday, with an agreement expected shortly thereafter, barring any setbacks in negotiations, NFL Network reported.
After missing out on prized free agent Kirk Cousins, the New York Jets addressed their gaping hole at quarterback by adding two veterans on Tuesday - Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown, league sources told ESPN.More news: Riyad Mahrez says he is stepping away from football
The three-year pact with Cousins is believed to be for around $86 million.
According to NFL.com, the contract is worth $22.5 million in 2018, $27.5 million for 2019 and $29.5 million in 2020. That led to a big payday for a journeyman who had started eight games for the Houston Texans in 2013 and nine games for the Los Angeles Rams in 2016 before posting an 11-3 regular-season record as the Vikings' starter in 2017. He is coming off yet another injury-plagued season but continues to find teams willing to pay him, lining up a one-year deal with the Cardinals for $20 million, plus an option for another season for another $20 million.
Of course, Keenum was helped by the Vikings' top-ranked defense, while Cousins was forced into more shoot-outs given Washington's defense ranked 28th, 28th, and 21st during his three seasons.
Cousins played 62 games for the Redskins, including 48 consecutive starts dating back to Week 1 of the 2015 season. He had a remarkable season previous year, which strengthened his case to any team wanting to sign him. Norwell's deal will include $30 million guaranteed.
Vikings fans whining about how their team has forsaken Case Keenum for a more expensive quarterback, stop right now. Time proved otherwise and taught me that there are no guarantees in this business - if you work hard and learn from your mistakes, good things can happen.
