Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was taken to a hospital on Tuesday where he was diagnosed with a mild viral illness of the upper respiratory system, according to officials with the hospital and the Prime Minister's office.

The construction of a security wall and an emergency exit route both need planning permission, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon said in a statement.

"As we promised, we won't let unnecessary bureaucracy delay the move of the American embassy to Jerusalem, Israel's eternal capital", he said in a statement.

A spokesman confirmed the illness while Ynet news site, citing his doctor, reported that Netanyahu hadn't taken enough time off to recover after suffering from a sore throat two weeks ago.

Netanyahu was reportedly driven to the hospital in his normal vehicle rather than in an ambulance. The hospital said there is a possibility he might have pneumonia.

Danny Yatom, who headed Mossad during Netanyahu's first stint in office in the late 1990s, called for him to be ousted, accusing him and aides of "putting their interests ahead of national interests" as corruption investigations deepen.

He is facing accusations of bribery, fraud and breach of public trust in Israel.

His wife and son were questioned Monday by police in a high-profile corruption investigation revolving around Bezeq, the Israeli telecom giant.

The Israeli leader dismissed the remarks as "biased, extreme and full of holes like Swiss cheese".

He is alleged to have received £72,000 ($100,000) in gifts from Hollywood mogul Arnon Milchan and other wealthy supporters. Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing and opinion polls show his popularity is still high.
