French club Paris Saint-Germain made Brazilian star Neymar the most expensive player in soccer history a year ago, paying $263 million to pry him away from Barcelona and then giving him a $53 million annual salary.
"It is true that, today, the chances of Neymar being ready [to face Real Madrid] are smaller than they were last Sunday [after the Marseille game]", he said.
This translates to the Brazilian likely being ruled out of playing in PSG's upcoming crucial second-leg of the UEFA Champions League fixture against Real Madrid. "Neymar wants to play every game - he's focused on Real".
PSG were already 3-0 up and had used all of their substitutes when Neymar rode a tackle from Marseille's Bouna Sarr and then appeared to roll his right ankle when planting his foot on the ground. PSG are yet to determine the duration of Neymar's absence from Emery's side.
However, the injury is not as bad as first feared and Neymar is expected to miss only the next three weeks of action after undergoing a scan on Sunday.More news: Oxfam Confirms Seven New Sex Allegations In High Street Shops
Emery said in the press conference ahead of Wednesday's French Cup game against Marseille: "It's false that Neymar is going to have an operation". "I talked to the doctors and we're yet to make a decision".
PSG revealed the extent of Neymar's injured foot late Monday without saying how long he will be sidelined.
"Neymar is doing this and his aim, no doubt, was Champions League because PSG didn't have the opportunity to win it yet". "Until Paris Saint-Germain decides on his future in terms of training or so on we will continue to wait".
While PSG's primary concern is having the world's most expensive player available for their Champions League match next week, in Brazil it is Neymar's participation at the World Cup that is most pressing. The proof is that here today we talked more about Ligue 1 than about other leagues.
