"Fire at Trump Tower is out".

Twitter users posted pictures of flames shooting out of windows on the 50th floor.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined as well as the identity of the victim.

Donald Trump's business is based in the tower and he has a residence there, although he has not spent much time in NY since he became U.S. President in January 2017.

The commissioner said firefighters went with the Secret Service to inspect the president's residence. "The apartment was quite large and 50 stories up", he said. "Firemen (and women) did a great job", the president wrote on Twitter at 6:42 p.m.

Trump continued to tweet through the evening, but never again referenced the fire, and never referenced the deceased or the tenant.

The cause of the fire is now unknown, but according to the New York City Fire Department, the fire was centered in a single large apartment, where they found one critically injured resident.

Daniel Nigro, commissioner of the New York City Fire Department, told reporters that the blaze was "a very hard fire, as you can imagine". One person has reportedly died and four firefighters were injured in the four-alarm blaze.

The department said 200 firefighters and EMS members were at the scene of the fire to bring the blaze under control.

That resident, a 67 year-old man, was found by firefighters passed out from fume inhalation, and later died in hospital.

Neither Mr. Trump or any of his household remained in the structure at the time of the fire. A minor fire also occurred on the building's roof three months ago. The headquarters of the Trump Organisation is on the 26th floor.

As the New York Dailiy News points out, Trump has previously fought legislation that would require buildings in New York City to require sprinklers.

The FDNY said the blaze broke out shortly before 6pm on Friday before flames and black smoke were seen rising from one corner of the 58-storey tower. "My husband is disabled and we were helpless".
