The casualty, Joao Souza, 19, was assaulted in his dormitory bundle all around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday.

"Investigators from multiple agencies have been interviewing numerous people throughout the night", a statement from the university read.

The incident "does not appear to be a random act", officials said. He was described as a "light-skinned male wearing dark trousers and a dark, Puma hooded sweatshirt".

Authorities did not disclose the name or any other information about the suspect at a 5 p.m. news conference, other than to say he was a Binghamton University student.

This was the second slaying of a student in the last two months.

"We want to make sure that everyone is reassured that the campus is safe and that there is no threat to the campus", Faughnan said.

Souza had previously attended high school in NY and was a native of Brazil, where his family was notified, according to the university. Counseling was being offered to students and staff.
