The "fusion" Nicklaus speaks of here, in case you were unaware, refers to the spinal procedure Woods underwent last spring, which was the fourth surgery on his back in total.
Nicklaus, 78, also thrilled the packed galleries by going four under, while 82-year-old Player was two under in an exhilarating showing by the former lions of the game. However, none of those Masters wins compares to what Nicklaus experienced on Wednesday.
Six-time victor Jack Nicklaus and three-time champion Gary Player hit honorary tee shots at Augusta National Golf Club.
Needless to say, Jack was absolutely beaming with pride.
Gary Jr celebrates the shot with his grandfather and Tom Watson by his side.
Watson, 68, previously won the Par 3 Contest in 1982 and becomes the oldest victor in the tournament's history.More news: With 'Roseanne' success, Roseanne Barr is back to raising eyebrows
And Nicklaus feels the 28-year-old is more than capable of doing so. Bryson DeChambeau, who won the 2017 John Deere Classic, shot 5 over, and Kevin Kisner, a favorite of bettors looking for a dark horse, somehow shot an 11-over 38.
No player has ever won the par three contest and gone on to win the Masters in the same year, but Watson was a longshot for victory anyway.
But Watson's victory might not have even been the highlight of his playing group, which included fellow World Golf Hall of Famers Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player of South Africa.
As well as Watson played in becoming the oldest Par-3 victor, he was challenged by 78-year-old Jack Nicklaus, who finished tied for third at 4-under.
"OK, ball, go a long way", Nicklaus said before his shot.
"We talked about three days ago and I said, do you want to hit the ball on 9? So I think that's been one of the problems with golf, so we need to get it to speed up".
